This site is dedicated to the memory of Sonia Sellings.

Sonia was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer on 17th May 2010. Age 43. As a family this news was devastating, Sonia digested the news and considered all the treatment options and was ready for the fight ahead. Sonia had a course of chemo which she responded really well to then had major de bulking surgery. Once she was on the road to recovery chemo carried on and Sonia went into remission in January 2011. Sonia lived her life to the full and enjoyed every moment. She was an amazing lady who gave so much to everyone. Sonia agreed to have the gene test done to see if she was a carrier of the BRACA gene. This test came back that she was a carrier of the BRACA 2 gene. This gave her brother and 5 sister the opportunity to be tested - her brother wasn't a carrier but sadly 2 of her sisters were. Sonia gave them and their children the chance of preventing this awful disease and putting things into place for them to help themselves, which they have done. Sonia was re diagnosed in May 2013 the cancer was back! Sonia was once again ready for the fight, she had beat it once and knew she could do it again. She endured more chemo, this in itself caused infections, sickness and the general effects from such hard treatment. She also fought septicaemia twice, and even spent Christmas 2013 in hospital. Yet through all this she kept smiling, and kept her attitude of 'I’m just getting on with it' throughout. Sonia once again got the all clear in January 2014. Sadly in April 2014 Sonia became unwell again and after going for a blood test with the gp her result came back her CA125 was over 900 a huge jump since the January test. She underwent a MRI and this confirmed the cancer was back, this time around the bowel but only small nodules. The plan was that Sonia was to start chemo again. Two weeks before she was to start chemo, she was in a lot of pain, and had trouble going to the toilet, she was admitted into hospital where they diagnosed gastroenteritis. She was discharged, but sadly within a few days Sonia was re admitted with a bowel obstruction. The bowel was blocked in several places so unfortunately surgery wasn’t an option. Sonia was still in good spirits and was happy to try anything that would aid the bowel to un block. Thankfully with in a few days there was bowel movement, and although she was on a fluid only diet she was discharged on the Wednesday. She came home on a fluid only diet and chemo was due to start the following Tuesday. By the Saturday the bowel had re blocked and Sonia was once again re admitted to the hospital. The news this time was great at all. There was no more that could be done for Sonia, she was given the option to stay in hospital or go to the local hospice for end of life care. She didn’t want either, she wanted to be at home with her family to enjoy the time she had left. She came home that day and quickly as a family we put procedures into place so she could be where she wanted to be. With help from Sonia's gp's, the local hospice and community nurses we were lucky enough to have 7 weeks and 1 day with Sonia. The time we had was a mixture of emotions, and Sonia gave her finally battle all that she had. Always being in control and she 'just got on with it'. Sadly Sonia Sellings passed away on the 26th June 2014 age 47 at home where she wanted to be surrounded by the most important people in her life - her family! We have opened this tribute fund in Sonia's name as we know she would want as much awareness as possible to be spread, as during her diagnoses she was fobbed off regularly with - a pulled muscle, urine infections, hernia problems, kidney infection the list is endless really. If we as a family can bring awareness to one person with Sonia's story, this we would find comforting and we know that Sonia would be looking down with a huge grin on her face knowing that hopefully that person and maybe many others would be touched by us carrying her name on through fundraising and awareness.
